School attendance, absence and your child

Nowadays we can see that school absence rate among students is going to increase from year to year. Why going to school regularly is important for our child in future? The answer is to make sure our children not fall behind with their work and can do well in exams. Once our child is registered at a school, we are legally responsible for making sure that they attend regularly. If our child fails to do so, our risk is getting a penalty notice or being prosecuted.

There are many ways to preventing our child from missing school, what you can do as parents? We must:

  • Making sure our child understand the importance of good attendance and punctuality
  • Taking an interest in their education and always about school work and encourage them to get involved in school activities
  • Discussing any problems they may have at school and inform their teacher or head teacher about anything serious problems
  • Not letting them take time off school for minor ailments
  • Arranging appointments and outing after school hours, at weekend or during school holidays

Support on school attendance introduced by government
m-Attendance is the first applications in Malaysia to detect the presence of students and to help reduce truancy rates through short messaging system (SMS) and e-mail. Secondary School (SMK) Kijal, Kemaman is first school in the country to use the m-Attendance pilot project. Total 41 pieces donated by Apple iPad Malaysia to SMK Kijal. The application system is using the iPad tablet computer platform that can manage the attendance of students in a fast, efficient and more systematic. The system developed by the Mobile Biz Network Sdn Bhd in collaboration with state government.

Among the benefits of m-Attendance
  • Through this system, parents will receive information through SMS and e-mail on a daily basis if their children did not come to school. Parents will find out quickly if their child does not go to school. If they have a specific reason on the matter, they can inform immediately to the school. M-Attendance also helps to facilitate parents to offer suggestion, views and complaints to the school via SMS.
  • m-Attendance is able to helping to publicize the activities and school programs such as school sport days, a reminder date of the examination, filing fees arrears, the meeting of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) more quickly, easily and cost effective. As such, it will improve image and credibility of the school.
  • m-Attendance has additional features such as the Homework Alert, Student Profile, Academic Report, Disciplinary Report and Digital Textbook.
  • m-Attendance also be able to facilitate and ease the burden of classroom teachers in managing student attendance data.
This project will be monitored over the next three months and if it would benefit it will be extended to other schools over the country.

I strongly believed that  m-Attendance can reduce burden of teacher like me as it can made my daily official work become efficient and effective.

ZeuS Trojan attempts to exploit MasterCard, Visa security programs

Do you familiar with ZeuS Trojan? If you are not sure, let me explain to you what is meant by ZeuS Trojan and how it exploit MasterCard, Visa secu rityprograms. The ZeuS Trojan has capability to steal financial information and execute unauthorized fund transfers. It has recently been seen attacking banking customers on infected machines by displaying a fake “Verified by Visa” enrollmen screen or its MasterCard counterpart SecureCode. ZeuS Trojan trying to lure victims into fraudulent online enrolment action that would end up giving criminals their sensitive financial data.

The real and legitimate Visa and MasterCard card-fraud prevention programs have cardholders use a password when making card based purchases online as an additional means of security. The remotely controlled ZeuS botnet, used by criminal organizations, waits for the victim to log onto a list of targeted banks or financial institutions and uses various ruses to steal credentials or execute unauthorized fund transfers. This newer attack is designed to trick banking customers into giving over their personal identification numbers, Social security number, credit and debit card number with expiration date.

Visa describes its Verified by Visa program as going beyond the already existing fraud detection it provides with “an extra layer of security at the point where you enter credit-card information online. The service helps prevent unauthorized online use before it happens by confirming your identity with an additional password.
As such those who think they have seen these fake Visa and MasterCard screens on their PC should do what they can do to disinfect their machine and contact their bank.

About Facebook

As we all known that nowadays Facebook is the most popular communication technology. What is meant by Facebook? Let me share with you what I had found about Facebook. Based on Wikipedia, Facebook is a social networking service and Web site launched in February 2004, operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc. Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommated and fellow computer science students Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. Facebook has more than 800 million active users (July 2011).

Before using Facebook, users must register first. After that they can create personal profiles with photos, list of personal interests, contact information and other personal information. User can communicate with friends and other users through private or public messages and a chat feature. Besides that, users can create and joint interest groups.

What are the most popular applications on Facebook? Sure everybody knows it. The answer is the Photos application. Facebook allow users to upload albums and unlimited number of photos. Privacy settings can be set for individual albums and limiting the groups of users that can see an album. For instance the privacy of an album can be set so that only the user’s friends can see the album, while the privacy of another album can be set so that all Facebook users can see it.

Another special feature of the Photo applications application is the ability to “tag” or label users in a photo. For example, if a photo contains a user’s friend, then the user can tag the friend in the photo. This sends a notification to the friend that they have been tagged and provides them a link to see the photo.
What is social impact of Facebook? Facebook has affected the social life and activity of people in various ways. Facebook allows users to continuously stay in touch with friends and relatives wherever they are in the world, as long as there is access to the Internet. Facebook also unite people with common interests and beliefs through groups and other pages and has been known to reunite lost family members and friends.

It’s true as it happened to me where I can find my old classmates during my primary and secondary school through Facebook. As a result from this we organized our reunion on previous Hari Raya Aidil Fitri. It's really work as I met my old friend and keep in touch with them after not seen in each other nearly 15 years.
